'The South End' - Cape Cod
Built in 2004
Mercer Island, WA
Private Residence - New Construction
The Cape Cod home is the first true American home that possesses European origin and domestic comfort. Architecturally, the exterior of the historical Cape Cod home is a box, often rectangular in shape, with a steep roof, low or non-existent eaves, low ceilings, and shingle or clapboard siding. The interiors are exclusively of wood, and the chimney historically lines up with the front door. The fireplace serves as the center and core of the home, as originally it was the only source for heat and cooking. The simplicity of these homes is what defines them with understated elegance and charm. By definition the Cape Cod home has limited features, therefore the detail of these homes is imperative. |

About The South End:
Steve and the building team at MatchPoint worked closely with the owners. The goal was to ensure the classic simplicity and authenticity of the Cape Cod home was created, while incorporating the needs of today's family lifestyle. The fireplace location (historically the core of the home) changed to accommodate today's lifestyles and demands. To parallel the authenticity on the exterior, in which with the chimney was centered over the door, the owners of The South End mounted a classic cupola and weathervane on the pitch of the main roof, subtly centered over the front door. Working with the owners on the details, including the exquisite 16" plank custom pine floors throughout the home; the hand picked exterior lanterns, and the weathervane and cupola. Transom windows, double hung multi pane windows and classic shutters compliment the hand-dipped cedar shingled home. Custom cabinetry, crown molding, bead board, tile work and masonry are some of the materials used to create The South End. The details of the construction and the quality of the work are very present.
